This report was commissioned by Learning Through Landscapes and the London Borough of Camden as part of a broader place shaping study within the Swiss Cottage neighbourhood. Our study looked at the wider public realm implications of delivering a new 6FE secondary school and an enlarged SEN school on the site of the existing Swiss Cottage specialist SEN school and the Frank Barnes School for the Deaf.
In particular, our report set out to identify an approach to and provide recommendations for, the design of the interface between the new schools and the wider Swiss Cottage environment. This was a challenging and interesting project that looked at how the new schools could be integrated better within the wider urban setting, to the benefit of both the design of the school and the surrounding public realm.
The study had a landscape and urban design focus and did not set out to prescribe detailed solutions to highways issues, although the principles of altering junctions and crossings were discussed with Camden Highways / Transport for London.
