Historic chimneys come down as new development approved
Following recent approval of the 1000 home scheme at Stewartby Brickworks, the remaining four chimneys on the site were demolished at the end of September 2021. Once the largest brickworks in the world, Stewartby formed part of the wider Marston Vale brick fields where 167 chimneys one stood, dominating the landscape of this area.
Following numerous structural surveys the chimneys were condemned back in 2019 due to instability reasons. Their demolition marks the end of an era for the brickworks, but not the end of its life. The site is to be redeveloped as a residential-led mixed use development and is to include a replacement chimney (built to the same dimensions as the iconic ‘Stewartby’ chimney) as part of a ‘heritage Gateway’ to the development.
