The Avenue Cemetery, Salisbury

Multi-faith Cemetery

Client:

Salisbury City Council

Location:

Salisbury, Wiltshire

Completion:

2019

A new multi-faith cemetery provided as part of an urban extension to Salisbury, Indigo were commissioned by Salisbury City Council to detail and oversee the implementation of this new facility which was required to provide essential new burial capacity for both Salisbury and Wilton.

Working with the City Council’s officers, our appointment included the full scope of service from concept design through to implementation; including the coordination and submission of a detailed planning application to Wiltshire Council. The design seeks to exploit the gently sloping topography and rural edge location; introducing a landscape framework for the cemetery that provides an appropriate formality set within a more informal landscape structure of native trees, hedgerows and managed grassland margins.

A memorial garden, which forms the centerpiece of the cemetery, includes a decorative structure that provides shelter as well as a visual focus to the cemetery.  The shelter is a traditional open-sided, oak-framed structure with clay tiles and is large enough to accommodate small groups.
