This project involved the design of a nursery play area for a school where the children are from diverse backgrounds, with 40 languages spoken.
As with many of our school projects our brief with this scheme developed from a detailed consultation exercise with the children, staff and parents, coordinated by Felicity Robinson from Landscapes Naturally, and involved presentation and discussions of several options and approaches. The final design was inspired by the cultural richness at the school and was tied together by an imaginary ‘river’ composed from a wide range of materials which threads its way through differing zones in the playground. Part of the brief was to ensure that the play area utilised as many natural materials as possible, while ensuring the space had a wide range of challenges for children of differing abilities.
