Quaker’s Walk
Urban design / masterplanning
Society of Merchant Venturers
Location:Devizes, Wiltshire
Site area:5.5 hectares
Following initial planning difficulties, Indigo were asked by Carter Jonas to appraise the current proposals for a care village on a highly sensitive green-field site, to undertake a landscape and visual impact appraisal and to provide further landscape design advice.
Looking at the site and the proposals from a new perspective, we expanded our initial brief (as often happens) and were commissioned to undertake a comprehensive re-masterplanning exercise for the site. Our new approach respected the sensitive historic landscape setting of Quaker’s Walk, a well-loved local path; the subtle landform; and the site’s wider setting. The layout concentrated on providing attractive, coherent and usable spaces between the buildings.
Crucially, by re-planning in a sensitive landscape-led manner, we were able to maintain the previous level of developable floor area and gain essential support from the local planning authority. Ultimately this lead to an outline approval for the care village.
