Tregarthens Hotel

Location:

Isles of Scilly

Our brief was to undertake a Landscape and Visual Appraisal on behalf of Tregarthen’s Hotel Ltd for the partial redevelopment of the hotel; and input into the masterplan for the creation of a new terraced garden space.

The design proposals required a careful and sensitive response in respect of its high profile location and planning context which includes:

  • An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (island wide);
  • The setting of a Scheduled Ancient Monument immediately adjoining the site (The Garrison Walls SAM) and numerous Listed Buildings;
  • A Conservation Area (island wide).

The proposals for the hotel complex were developed by Grainge Architects including a mix of demolition, remodelling and refurbishment. Collectively, including the terraced garden, the scheme was designed to respect the adjoining heritage assets and to reflect the local character and context; creating an attractive development that responds to its sense of place and has a clear identity.

Planning approval was gained in August 2017, following which we have prepared detailed proposals to sign off conditions.
