The Walcot FoundationLocation:
Indigo were appointed by The Walcot Foundation to provide landscape design input for this small but high quality development in Lambeth, London.
The scope of the development involves the demolition of existing garage buildings and the erection of a ‘mews’ style terrace of five 2-storey 3 bed mews houses and one detached 4 bed house (‘Garden House’), together with associated external works.
Working with FORMstudio Architects, London, we developed a landscape concept along with hard and soft materials palettes to support a planning application.
Notably, the site is located in the Walcot Conservation Area and sandwiched between two terraces of Grade II listed buildings, requiring a careful and sensitive response. The architectural design proposes the use of London stock brickwork and bronze anodized aluminium frames with laser cut panels for the first floor element of the Garden House; providing an innovative design solution that responds positively to the context and character of the area.
In terms of the external works, an important requirement was the retention of a number of existing TPO trees and the careful choice of complementary hard materials and planting design.
Detailed planting proposals including a maintenance and management plan were produced to discharge the relevant planning conditions.
The application was approved in 2017 and work was completed in 2022.
In 2023, the scheme was shortlisted for the British Homes Awards and AJ Architecture Awards.
