Turners Hill Crematorium approved at Appeal

Following refusal of planning in December 2020 our proposed crematorium at Turners Hill in West Sussex was taken to Appeal this May leading to an outstanding result for our client.

For Indigo the project involved the preparation of outline proposals for a single chapel crematorium on the site, along with a supporting Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment and the Design and Access Statement for the scheme. Located immediately adjacent to the High Weald AONB, the proposals take a phased approach to the establishment of woodland, creating a development that blends with the surrounding landscape whilst maximising the distant views to the north.

Prior to the application our client had gained permission for a small chapel and natural burial use on the site, and with this supportive ‘fallback’ position (and the use of our in-house photomontage specialist), our director Mark Gibbins acted as expert witness and gave evidence which led to the Council withdrawing its objection to the scheme part way through the Public Inquiry.

Following the success of the Appeal, the project is now being marketed and we hope to be able to take it to site with the successful crematorium operator in the near future.
